Project 52: Low Light

posted in: Personal 5

This is week 8 of my Project 52 blog circle, and when I saw the theme was low light, I knew right away what I wanted to shoot.  My daughter loves to read in the car and I wanted to capture an image of her reading by the reading light in my minivan.

When I got a new minivan last year, Andrea was immediately fascinated by the reading lights for the backseat passengers. She loves to read in the car and the reading lights let her read after dark. Especially on road trips, when I’m a passenger, I have enjoyed looking back to see her and her book illuminated, surrounded by darkness. I knew I wanted to try to get a picture of that sometime, but I knew I would have to do it when we were parked. So when I saw the theme this week was low light, I asked my my daughter if she wanted to go read in our van. Without skipping a beat, she happily grabbed a book and went out to the garage, and I followed with my camera.

I really enjoyed the push this week to actually follow through with a vision I had in my head previously while riding in the car. And I was really happy with the results – I feel like I was able to capture my vision exactly as I had planned. I learned to enjoy low light photography when I took Mastering Natural Light Indoors over a year ago, but sometimes I need a reminder to get the camera out even when the sun is down. The gears in my head are already turning for some other low light shots I was to try to get. So much inspiration this week!

I love that she was so game for reading in the van. These turned out wonderfully!

I love that you set this shot up, I sometimes feel like I’m cheating when I do that but if it’s something that happens regularly, I think it’s great. They came out lovely too, I love how the light isolates her so well – really adds to the ‘lost in the story’ feeling.

I might steal this idea for the new week’s assignment, alternative light. I’ve taken the pictures already, but still trying to think of more creative ideas.

    It’s not cheating, Jude. It’s re-creating. 😀

Love this shot! My kids always want to read in the backseat too. I like the idea of recreating the moment so you can photograph it.

Wonderful idea; I identify with your daughter! There is something about a little girl absorbed in a book that grabs me every time.
